Company car drivers who neglect tyres risk accidents
According to safety group TyreSafe, 25 per cent of company car drivers have never checked the depth of their tyre tread, and 41 per cent of company car drivers have neglected to check their tread within the last six months.
The group has warned that those not making the necessary checks face punishments such as fines, and TyreSafe say that the responsibility for tyre safety lays in both the companies and the employees’ hands.
TyreSafe chairman Stuart Jackson had this to say “Company car drivers typically cover around 20,000 miles per year, almost double that of private motorists so it is particularly important that they pay attention to their tyres”.
Therefore TyreSafe have their own campaign, ‘lifesaver in your pocket’, to encourage drivers to insert a 20p coin into the main grooves of the tyre as a way of checking the depth of their tyre tread. If the outer band of the 20p can be seen when the coin has been placed, then it is recommended that the driver has his or her tyre checked by a trained specialist.
